Sybiga called on partners to urgently provide Ukraine with locomotives
Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga appealed to international partners to help Ukraine restore its fleet of locomotives, which has suffered significant losses due to systematic Russian strikes on the railway infrastructure.
According to him, on the night of September 15, a Russian attack near the Polish border in Volyn damaged yet another Ukrainian locomotive. In total, since the start of the full-scale war, more than 500 locomotives have been damaged or destroyed by Russian shelling, with more than half of these losses occurring in 2026.
Sybiga emphasized that the railway remains critically important for Ukraine’s functioning. It is used to evacuate people from dangerous areas, transport essential cargo, and deliver grain and other goods throughout the country.
“For this vital artery to continue functioning, Ukraine urgently needs replacements,” the foreign minister noted.
He called on partners to help Ukraine find locomotives compatible with the 1,520-mm gauge and to provide financial support to expedite the procurement of new equipment.
According to Sibiga, strengthening the Ukrainian railway will help avoid humanitarian crises and maintain the country’s stability amid the war.

In the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv, an enemy drone struck the roof of a four-story business center. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to investigate the circumstances and address the aftermath of the incident.
