Turkey is ready to lead the maritime component of security guarantees for Ukraine

Turkey is ready to take a leading role in the maritime component of future international security guarantees for Ukraine. The navies of the allied states are already conducting planning in this area.

This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga in Kyiv. According to Fidan, potential security guarantees for Ukraine could include three components—land, sea, and air.

“Turkey has agreed to lead the maritime component. We have reached a mutual understanding with our allies on this issue. The navies of the relevant allied states are already carrying out planning in this regard,” the Turkish minister said.

He also emphasized the importance of security in the Black Sea region, calling the preservation of stability in the Black Sea a vital prerequisite. According to him, Ankara continues to work on initiatives regarding the safety of navigation and the protection of energy infrastructure in the region.

Fidan separately reaffirmed Turkey’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Ankara’s unwavering position on not recognizing the illegal annexation of Crimea. He added that Turkey will continue to support the Crimean Tatars and defend their rights.
