In Cherkasy, a 10-year-old boy was shot in the leg; the perpetrator may face only a fine

In Cherkasy, a 10-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. According to the child’s mother, he was likely shot with a rifle, and the bullet passed through his leg and lodged in his shoe.

Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident and trying to determine who fired the shot. According to preliminary information, the perpetrator could face a fine.

The boy’s mother, Nadiya Vorona, said that on August 10, her son, along with her niece and another friend, were playing in the yard of their house. “My son took a flashlight from home, and his friend had a slingshot, and he was shooting acorns at trees and bushes. And apparently, he hit the house near the windows where a couple lives. They started yelling at the children and calling them names. The children didn’t respond; they just walked away and fell silent,” the woman said.

Later, according to Nadiya, the friend’s mother came out and took him home, while her son and niece decided to keep playing.

“But a man appeared in the courtyard, and the children ran away again. They saw that he was holding some long, dark object in his hand, similar to a stick. When the children returned to the courtyard for the third time, they didn’t see that man. But near our building entrance, my son heard a gunshot and felt pain in his leg. We didn’t immediately realize what had happened until he found a small black bullet in his sock,” Nadiya recalled.

She said that when she went out to check on her son, she saw a wound on his leg that was bleeding slightly. The boy himself said it felt like he’d been zapped by electricity and didn’t realize at first that it was a bullet. After the incident, his mother called an ambulance and the police. According to Nadiya, at the hospital they were told that the bullet had passed right through and hadn’t hit any bone.

“During the examination by the doctor on duty, it was determined—and confirmed by X-ray—that it was most likely a gunshot wound; it was a through-and-through wound. The boy underwent initial surgical treatment of the wound, was prescribed antibiotic therapy, and is currently staying with us for treatment until we can confirm that there are no infectious complications,” said Dr. Vasyl Bezkorovainy.

The regional prosecutor’s office stated that the information has been entered into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 125 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional infliction of minor bodily injury that did not result in a temporary health impairmentor minor loss of working capacity). The article provides for punishment in the form of a fine of up to 50 non-taxable minimum incomes, amounting to 850 hryvnias, or community service or correctional labor.
