In Kyiv, a lawyer promised to help a man avoid mobilization for $15,000

Investigators from the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv have notified a lawyer of their suspicion that he promised, for $15,000, to illegally secure an exemption from conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a person subject to military service.

The lawyer’s illegal activities were uncovered by investigators from the Kyiv Metropolitan Police with operational support from Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officers and under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, the 44-year-old lawyer expanded the scope of his services and began offering conscripts illegal solutions to issues related to mobilization.

During a meeting with a client, the lawyer offered, for $7,500, to register the man as an employee of a company that was to receive “critically important” status, after which he would be exempt from conscription. As an advance payment, the client handed over $2,000 and documents to draw up a power of attorney. However, the company failed to obtain the necessary status, and the lawyer subsequently offered other “employment” options.

As a result, the lawyer promised to arrange fictitious employment for the client at another critical-infrastructure enterprise. Under the agreement, the man was to be officially registered and reserved, but was not actually required to work. The cost of this scheme was $15,000. Therefore, taking into account the $2,000 previously paid, the client was to pay an additional $13,000.

Law enforcement officers detained the suspect at a café immediately after he received another $13,000 in illicit compensation, in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The man was notified of his status as a suspect under Part 5 of Article 27 and Part 4 of Article 368-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—aiding a public official of a private-law legal entity in obtaining an unlawful benefit, combined with extortion.

The court imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of pretrial detention with the right to post bail in the amount of 100,000 hryvnias. For these offenses, he faces up to seven years in prison, along with a ban on holding certain positions or engaging in certain activities for up to three years, and confiscation of property.

This was reported by the Kyiv Police.

The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has launched an anti-corruption campaign titled “Bribes Have Consequences.”

In the Chernihiv region, more than 15,000 liters of diesel fuel were stolen from a border guard unit.

The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has not detained the SBU special forces officers involved in the shooting at GUR soldiers.

A video of a conflict involving gunfire between employees of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Main Intelligence Directorate in Kyiv is circulating online. The released footage shows a verbal altercation and shoving match between those involved in the incident, which later escalated into SBU special forces opening fire on GUR soldiers.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the shooting incident between representatives of the SBU and the Main Intelligence Directorate in Kyiv “absolutely shameful” and ordered a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
