In Lviv, a woman had a hernia removed at the same time as her cesarean section
In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman underwent simultaneous removal of a recurrent ventral hernia, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth. As a result, a healthy baby boy was born, and the mother avoided another surgery and a lengthy recovery.
At the Mother and Child Clinic of Lviv University Hospital, doctors successfully performed a complex combined surgery on a 26-year-old resident of the Sambir district. The woman was admitted to the hospital at 37 weeks into her third pregnancy. She had previously undergone two surgeries for a hernia of the anterior abdominal wall. However, the problem recurred during this pregnancy.
According to the patient, Diana Vanevska, she went to the hospital because of pain in her side and lower abdomen. “When I got pregnant, my side and lower abdomen started to hurt. I came here specifically because I was told this was the best hospital. I didn’t know about the hernia—the doctors discovered it,” the woman said. After an examination, the obstetricians-gynecologists, together with a surgeon, decided not to perform two separate surgeries but to do everything in one go.
During the cesarean section, the doctors not only delivered the baby but also immediately repaired the recurrent ventral hernia. To do this, they used a special prosthetic mesh that strengthens the abdominal wall and helps reduce the risk of the hernia recurring. “We performed a cesarean section and hernioplasty for a recurrent ventral hernia using a mesh implant. This approach allowed us to simultaneously deliver the baby and correct a condition that could have led to serious complications,” said obstetrician-gynecologist Zhanna Saling and Yuriy Burak, head of the Department of Extragenital Pathology and Pregnancy Pathology.
According to surgeon Petro Vuytsyk, this operation was not straightforward. Due to two previous surgeries and the recurrent nature of the hernia, the doctors had to work with particular care. “The patient had a recurrent ventral hernia with a diameter of up to five centimeters. Due to the previous surgeries and the specific characteristics of her connective tissue, the case required special attention,” the doctor explained.
The combined procedure made it possible to avoid another anesthesia, a separate surgery, and an additional postoperative recovery period. This significantly facilitated the young mother’s recovery. A healthy baby boy was born during the surgery; he was named Matviyko. According to the doctors, both the mother and the newborn are doing well and are under medical supervision.
The hospital also reminded the public that women who have previously undergone surgery on the anterior abdominal wall or are prone to hernias should pay special attention to their health during pregnancy. Doctors advise against ignoring pain in the abdomen or groin area and recommend seeking medical attention promptly. Early detection of such problems helps prevent dangerous complications and allows for the selection of the best treatment plan for both the mother and the unborn child.
