The exhumation of Polish soldiers has begun in Lviv

Research has begun in Lviv for the exhumation and subsequent reburial of the remains of Polish Army soldiers who died in combat in September 1939.

The work will take place from August 25 to October 2 at the old Holosko Cemetery. It is being conducted by Ukrainian Memory LLC in collaboration with experts from the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland and the Medical University of Wrocław.

Back in 2019, during research on the site of the former village of Holosko Velyke, signs of burial sites for Polish soldiers were discovered. In September 1939, battles took place here between units of the Wehrmacht and the Polish Army, and the fallen soldiers were buried in a mass grave at the local cemetery.

The exhumation work is being carried out as part of the agreements reached by the Ukrainian-Polish Working Group on National Memory. Experts from the Lviv-based company “Dolia” are also monitoring the search efforts.

Previously, the Polish Institute of National Remembrance stated that Ukraine had authorized exhumation work at the site of the former village of Huta Peniatska. This involves the search for and exhumation of the remains of victims of the Volhynia tragedy.

In Volhynia, Ukrainian and Polish experts have completed exhumation work in the areas of the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska, where they investigated mass graves dating back to World War II.
