Grape processing in Ukraine has increased by a quarter
The Ukrainian wine industry is showing positive growth in 2025. The volume of grapes processed increased by 25.4% compared to the previous year, reaching 40,000 metric tons.
This growth indicates a gradual recovery of winemaking following previous challenging periods. Experts note positive trends in the industry’s development and an increase in production volumes.
Although the average annual decline in processing volumes from 2019 to 2025 was 24%, the 2025 figures indicate a reversal of the negative trend.
Changes in Planting Area and Regional Structure
The area under vineyards declined significantly in 2022–2023 (by 20.9% and 23.9%, respectively). In 2024, a partial recovery of 6.6% was recorded; however, in 2025, the area under wine grapes decreased by another 1%, and that under table grapes by 44%.
The average grape yield nationwide is 40.4 centners per hectare. The key regions for domestic viticulture remain:
Odesa Oblast: 9,000 hectares (yield—29.5 centners per hectare, gross harvest—348,500 centners);
Mykolaiv Oblast: 3,100 hectares (yield—49.9 centners per hectare, gross harvest—136,400 centners);
Zakarpattia Oblast: 0.7 thousand hectares (yield—14.1 centners per hectare, gross harvest—14.8 thousand centners).
Leading Varieties
The varieties Aligoté, Rkatsiteli, Chardonnay, Saperavi Northern, and Odessa Black demonstrated the greatest resilience to reductions in planted area (the decline did not exceed 15%). The highest sugar concentration levels in 2025 were recorded in the Traminer Rosé, Sauvignon, Merlot, Odessa Black, and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties.
In the structure of wine production for 2025, 68.3% was accounted for by table wines, and about 25% by sparkling wines.
