River water levels in Transcarpathia have dropped to a quarter of normal
In Transcarpathia this summer, river water levels in the lowland part of the region have dropped to 25% of normal. This applies, in particular, to the Latorica, Uzh, and Tisa rivers, according to Natalia Platonova, head of the meteorological research department at the Transcarpathian Center for Hydrometeorology.
According to her, the situation is somewhat better in the mountainous areas, where, thanks to rainfall, river water levels are about 33% of normal.
The expert explained that the main cause is a drop in the groundwater level. An analysis of data from 2016 shows that the situation is worsening every year, and the region is gradually entering a period of low water levels.
This year’s snow-poor winter did not provide for the spring flood, and since April, Transcarpathia has been recording a steady decline in river water levels. Experts predict that the low-water conditions will persist into the fall.
