Steel production in Ukraine declined during the first half of the year
In the first six months of 2026, Ukrainian steelmakers produced 3.66 million metric tons of pig iron, 3.57 million metric tons of steel, and 2.94 million metric tons of rolled steel.
By comparison, during the same period in 2025, Ukraine produced 3.67 million metric tons of pig iron, 3.68 million metric tons of steel, and 3.07 million metric tons of rolled steel.
Thus, on an annual basis, pig iron production decreased by 0.2%, steel production by 3.2%, and rolled steel production by 4.3%.
At the same time, June was one of the most successful months of the year for the industry. At the end of the month, steel production reached 690.8 thousand metric tons, which is 11.2% more than in June 2025 and 9.7% higher than in May.
Pig iron production in June also rose to 670.6 thousand metric tons, up 1.3% year-over-year and 5.7% compared to the previous month.
Rolled steel output in June also showed positive growth, increasing to 599.8 thousand metric tons. This is 6.5% more than in June of last year and 11.5% more than in May 2026.
At the same time, not all months of the first half of the year were successful for the metallurgical industry. Specifically, in April, pig iron production lagged behind 2025 figures by 16.1%, steel production by 25.3%, and rolled steel production by 15.8%.
Despite a noticeable uptick in production in June, the overall results for the first half of 2026 remained lower than during the same period last year.
This is evidenced by data from “Ukrmetallurgprom.”
It is worth noting that, despite the full-scale war, Ukraine’s mining and metallurgical sector remains one of the key pillars of the economy and a key driver of investment in industry.
