Zelensky orders parliament to respond to “Washington speculations” on elections during war
Zelensky called the statements of a “partner in Washington” regarding Ukrainian elections mere speculations. He instructed the Verkhovna Rada to give a clear answer on whether elections are possible under martial law, provided that “partners” guarantee their security.
This was mentioned in Volodymyr Zelensky’s address at the end of the 1386th day of the war.
“Today, I spoke with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Specifically. I will not allow any speculations against Ukraine, and if partners, including our key partner in Washington, speak so much and so concretely about elections in Ukraine — about elections under martial law — then we must provide legitimate Ukrainian answers to every question and every doubt. This is not easy, but we certainly do not need pressure on this. I expect that Ukraine’s members of parliament will propose their vision. Security challenges depend on partners, primarily America, while political and legal challenges must receive answers from Ukraine. And this will happen. Glory to Ukraine!” the president said.
Recall that U.S. President Donald Trump stated that elections should be held in Ukraine, hinting at a lack of democracy due to their postponement during the full-scale war.
Zelensky responded that he considers such statements inadequate. However, he suggested that if the U.S. and European partners guarantee security for elections, Ukraine would be ready to hold voting within 60–90 days.
