Zelenskyy and Koshta Discussed New Steps Toward Ukraine's Accession to the EU

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European Council President António Costa during the NATO summit in Ankara. The main topic of the talks was Ukraine’s progress toward European Union membership and the opening of new negotiation clusters.

The leaders also discussed further steps to bring Ukraine closer to full EU membership. The Office of the President emphasized that the Ukrainian state and its citizens have fully earned this stage of European integration. During the talks, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked António Costa for his consistent support of Ukraine on its path to European Union membership.

The parties paid particular attention to the negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. They discussed opening five more negotiation clusters as soon as possible, which remains the next important step in the process of European integration. “The presidents also discussed a potential timeline for the next steps, which Ukraine and the Ukrainian people have fully earned,” the Office of the President reported.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit being held in Ankara. As a reminder, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Turkey to participate in the summit and a series of bilateral talks with the leaders of partner countries. It is expected that during his visit, the President of Ukraine will also meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders of NATO member states.

Earlier that day, Zelenskyy had already met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. During this conversation, the parties discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, accelerating the delivery of missiles for air defense systems, developing joint weapons production, and expanding defense cooperation between Ukraine and NATO member states.

The summit in Ankara served as a platform for a series of important international talks focused on both security issues and Ukraine’s further integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures. The Office of the President of Ukraine reported on the meeting.
