On the night of August 4, drones attacked the Syzran Oil Refinery in Russia’s Samara Region, after which a fire broke out on the refinery’s grounds. The refinery is one of the key suppliers of fuel to the Russian military and the defense sector.

According to monitoring channels, explosions were heard in Syzran, after which a column of smoke rose above the refinery grounds. Local eyewitnesses are posting footage of the fire at the facility. As of the time of publication, there have been no official comments from the Samara Region authorities or the Russian Ministry of Defense; details and the extent of the damage are being clarified.

The Syzran Oil Refinery is owned by the state-owned company Rosneft and is part of the Samara oil refining hub, along with the Kuibyshev and Novokuibyshevsk refineries. The facility has a processing capacity of 8.5 to 8.9 million metric tons of crude oil per year—about 3% of Russia’s total oil refining capacity. The refinery supplies automotive fuel and bitumen to the Volga region and central Russia, as well as diesel and lubricants for military equipment in the Central and Southern Military Districts of the Russian Federation, which are fighting against Ukraine. Aviation kerosene from Syzran is sent to military airfields from which aircraft take off to carry out missile and bombing strikes.

This was reported by the monitoring Telegram channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+.
