The NORSI oil refinery (“Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez”), which ranks fourth in Russia in terms of crude oil refining volume and second in gasoline production, has suspended operations following an attack by Ukrainian drones.

According to the refinery, the attack damaged individual production units, inter-shop utility lines, and general plant infrastructure. It is currently unknown when the plant will resume operations.

NORSI’s capacity exceeds 15 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The plant also produces approximately 5 million metric tons of gasoline and more than 5 million metric tons of diesel fuel annually.

According to sources, the drone attack damaged several refining units, the infrastructure connecting the units, and general plant facilities. The sources were unable to say how long it would take to repair the damage and resume oil refining operations at the plant.

On August 26, an industrial facility in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region was damaged as a result of an attack by Ukrainian drones, as reported on Wednesday by the region’s governor, Gleb Nikitin.

Lukoil, which owns the refinery, has not commented on the attack.

Currently, all of Lukoil’s major Russian oil refineries are shut down. The Perm oil refinery halted operations following a drone attack on August 21, and the Volgograd oil refinery suspended processing on July 31.

NORSI can process about 15 million metric tons of crude oil per year and produce approximately 5 million metric tons of gasoline, over 5 million metric tons of diesel fuel, 2 million metric tons of fuel oil, and about 500,000 metric tons of bitumen.

Three industry sources told Reuters about this.
