Drapaty discussed issues and reforms within the corps with sergeants on the front lines

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapatiy held a meeting with the chief sergeants of the various branches and services, corps, and military command bodies. Most of the participants arrived directly from combat zones along various sectors of the front.

During the meeting, they discussed the current state of the sergeant corps, combat experience, systemic issues affecting its capabilities, as well as ways to address these issues and the further development of sergeants in wartime conditions.

According to Drapato, sergeants play a critically important role on the battlefield. They are not only responsible for training service members but also integrate newly arrived soldiers directly in combat zones, organize their logistics, equipment, and daily living conditions, prepare them for combat missions, and withdraw them from positions.

Sergeants also directly lead personnel during combat.

“A sergeant was a soldier himself just yesterday. Today, he is a commander who is closest to the soldiers and has the best view of the unit’s actual situation ‘on the ground,’” the commander-in-chief noted.

Following the meeting, a list of systemic issues was compiled across key areas. In particular, these include improving the structure of the sergeant corps, expanding the authority of sergeants, and clearly defining the division of responsibilities between sergeants and officers.

Special attention was paid to improving the quality of training for soldiers and sergeants. Among the proposed changes are the development of training for non-commissioned officers directly in combat zones and the prompt incorporation of current combat experience into the training of service members at training centers.

There are also plans to streamline appointments to sergeant positions and the conferral of military ranks by introducing transparent and clear procedures, as well as to resolve issues regarding pay for key sergeant positions.

Drapatiy reported that he has set specific tasks for each of the identified areas. Further steps have also been defined, along with those responsible for their implementation.
