Drones attacked Lukoil's oil refinery in Perm, causing a fire

On the morning of August 21, drones attacked the Russian city of Perm, home to the large “Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez” oil refinery. Russian authorities confirmed the attack and reported that air defense systems were activated.

According to the Russian Ministry of Territorial Security for the Perm Krai, air defense forces are attempting to repel the drone attack.

Local social media posts suggest that one of the possible targets of the attack could have been the “Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez” oil refinery, located in Perm, more than 1,500 km from Ukraine.

Sirens are sounding in the city, and residents of some neighborhoods are reporting loud explosions.

According to Russian and local social media sources, the Velikoye Savino Airport has temporarily suspended aircraft arrivals and departures.

The restrictions are attributed to the threat of a drone attack.

“Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez” is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. Its capacity is approximately 13 million metric tons of crude oil per year, and its products are used not only for civilian needs but also to supply the Russian military.

The facility has been targeted in attacks on multiple occasions. On July 29, the SBU confirmed that the refinery’s infrastructure had been struck, after which a fire broke out on the plant’s grounds.

Previously, in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia, the 53rd Arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense was likely hit during a drone attack.

As a reminder, the Russian oil refinery “Orsknefteorgsintez” suspended oil processing following a Ukrainian drone attack on August 11.
