Drones attacked an oil refinery in Russia's Samara Region, causing a fire

On the morning of April 18, drones attacked an oil refinery in the city of Novokuybyshevsk in Russia’s Samara Region. The strike caused a fire at the facility.

According to monitoring channels, explosions were heard in the city around 4:30 a.m. local time—eyewitnesses counted at least 6–8 loud sounds. Bright flashes were observed in the sky over the eastern and northern districts of Novokuybyshevsk.

After the attack, thick black smoke rose over the city, and a massive fire broke out on the oil refinery’s grounds. Reports also indicate that air raid sirens were activated. The airport implemented “Carpet” mode, which entails a temporary flight ban.

Samara Region Governor Vyacheslav Fedoryshev warned of the threat of a drone attack in the region around 3:00 a.m., but he has not officially commented on the incident itself.

According to preliminary information, the Novokuybyshevsk Oil Refinery, owned by Rosneft, was hit. The facility is one of the key refineries in the Volga region, with a capacity of about 8.8 million tons of oil per year.

According to geolocation data, the fire likely broke out at the "ELOU-AVT-6 (AVT-11)" unit.

The day before, units of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces struck 16 military targets of the Russian invaders, including bases housing Iskander tactical missile systems, air defense assets, and an oil refinery in Tuapse on Russian territory.

Explosions were heard in the Russian city of Tuapse, Krasnodar Krai, on the night of April 16 amid a drone attack. The strikes may have targeted tanks at the Tuapse oil refinery, which is owned by Rosneft.

As a reminder, on the morning of April 15, Ukrainian “Lyuty” strike drones attacked a petrochemical plant in the city of Sterlitamak, located in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russian Federation.

As a reminder, in Sterlitamak, Bashkortostan—one of the centers of the Russian Federation’s chemical and petrochemical industries—an attack was recorded on facilities that may be linked to the production of components for military equipment.

Also, last night, the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula came under a massive drone strike.
