A key component of the Oreshnik may not be functioning properly — Defense Express

The Russian "Oreshnik" medium-range ballistic missile is reportedly still in the testing phase, and its key component—the individual warhead guidance system—may not be functioning properly.

This is reported by Defense Express.

Analysts noted that during all recorded launches of the "Oreshnik" over Ukrainian territory, the warheads fell close to one another. At the same time, the missile’s main feature lies precisely in its ability to disperse individual warheads over a significant distance to strike different targets.

Experts note that development of this missile began back in the 2000s based on Soviet work on the RS-26 “Rubezh” project. Despite the lengthy development cycle, there are currently no signs that the individual guidance system is fully operational.

Defense Express notes that the so-called “bus”—the warhead separation module—requires extremely high precision. Even a minor error during maneuvering can result in a miss by several kilometers.

According to the publication, components of this unit were found among the rocket debris after one of the strikes; however, its capabilities were not actually demonstrated during recent launches.

According to analysts, without a functional individual guidance system, the practical value of the “Oreshnik” for the Russian military is significantly reduced. Source: Defense Express.
