The Main Intelligence Directorate has identified a mercenary from Sierra Leone who fought on Russia's side
Ukrainian military intelligence has identified Kamara Alaji, a citizen of Sierra Leone, who fought on the side of Russian forces. This was reported on October 2 by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, Kamara Alaji was born in the city of Bo in central Sierra Leone but was registered in the country’s capital, Freetown.
As established by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, on March 15, 2026, Kamara Alaji flew from Conakry—the capital of Guinea—to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
The next day, March 16, he transferred flights in Dubai and flew to Moscow. According to Ukrainian intelligence, it was there that the Sierra Leonean citizen signed a contract with the Russian occupation army.

After that, Kamara Alaji underwent brief training and was sent to fight in the war against Ukraine.
“In early April, after brief training, he was sent to fight in the criminal war against Ukraine—Kamara ended up in the Donetsk region. As early as the beginning of June 2026, the Sierra Leonean was killed near the village of Shakove,” the statement from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reads.
Thus, Kamara Alaji served in the Russian forces for only a few months. According to Ukrainian intelligence, he was killed in the Donetsk region in early June 2026.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine also reported that the “I Want to Live” project is currently aware of at least 13 Russian mercenaries from Sierra Leone.
According to Ukrainian sources, two of them are currently being held captive.
Ukrainian intelligence continues to gather information on foreign citizens whom Russia is recruiting to fight in the war against Ukraine.
