Italy plans to test its new "Michelangelo Dome" air defense system in Ukraine
The Italian company Leonardo plans to test components of its new integrated air and missile defense system, “Michelangelo Dome,” in Ukraine by the end of 2026.
The system is designed to integrate various sensors and weapons into a single network using artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies. According to the developers, it will be able to independently detect threats and determine the optimal way to intercept them.
“Michelangelo Dome” is designed to counter a wide range of aerial targets, including swarms of drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic missiles.
Leonardo previously stated that Ukraine would serve as a testing ground for the new system. Its first component is already being developed here.
At the same time, it is currently unknown exactly which elements of the “Michelangelo Dome” will be tested in Ukraine. Once testing is complete, the system is planned to be scaled up for use by NATO member states.
According to analysts, the concept involves a modular architecture to which various components can be added depending on the customer’s needs. In particular, Leonardo is considering integrating systems from MBDA and the Guardian satellite group.

As a reminder, fully autonomous drones equipped with artificial intelligence were used for the first time in Ukraine during field tests; according to the developers, these drones were capable of independently detecting and engaging targets. This test is already being called a potential step toward a new level of warfare.
