The Cabinet of Ministers has allocated more than ₴518 million to protect state information systems from attacks by the Russian Federation

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated 518.3 million hryvnia from the reserve fund to strengthen the protection and redundancy of state information systems. The decision was made in light of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s digital infrastructure.

According to the head of government, the allocated funds will be used to create geographically separated backup environments and sites, as well as to develop cloud infrastructure.

The funding, in particular, provides for:

  • the purchase of server equipment;
  • the acquisition of necessary software;
  • the development of cloud infrastructure;
  • the creation of backup sites;
  • the acquisition of data backup and recovery systems.

The Cabinet of Ministers expects that this will allow for a faster restoration of government information systems and digital services if they are damaged as a result of Russian missile strikes, drone attacks, or cyberattacks.

“We must be prepared for various scenarios, including the worst-case ones,” Serhiy Koretsky emphasized.

Earlier, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi stated that Ukraine is preparing for the worst-case scenario amid Russian strikes on data centers and telecommunications infrastructure.

According to him, the government is working to ensure that citizens retain access to the internet and digital services even if critical infrastructure is damaged.

Koretsky explained that several solutions could be used simultaneously to protect digital systems. Specifically, they plan to place some of the equipment underground, back up data in cloud storage, and physically move certain digital resources outside of Ukraine.

The prime minister emphasized that several methods of backup and protection can be applied simultaneously for various information systems.

Russian attacks on digital infrastructure have already led to disruptions in the operation of certain services.

In particular, following an attack on the Cosmonova data center in Kyiv, the company reported that the facility would no longer be operational and that its services were being restored using backup sites.

The allocation of over 518 million hryvnias from the reserve fund is intended to strengthen the ability of state information systems to operate and recover even in the event of damage to the primary digital infrastructure.

This was announced by Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi.
