Agreement before the Montreal summit

Canada and the EU aim to reach an agreement on Canada’s financial contribution before the EU-Canada summit scheduled for late October in Montreal.

Possible associate membership

As The Wall Street Journal writes, Canada is also considering the possibility of applying for associate membership in the European Union. The publication cites conversations with EU and Canadian officials.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking closer relations with the EU. According to YLE News, the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States has strengthened Ottawa’s strategic need to deepen ties with other key trading partners. The Canadian Embassy in Brussels and the European Commission did not respond to WSJ requests for comment.
