Lavrov announced a meeting with Rubio in the Philippines
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia—the aggressor state—stated that he will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events in the Philippines.
According to Lavrov, the meeting has already been agreed upon and is scheduled to take place in the first half of the following day. During a press conference broadcast by Russian media, he said: “The meeting has already been agreed upon. We met with Marco Rubio yesterday and confirmed it. It will take place tomorrow in the first half of the day.”
Lavrov also stated that he plans to ask Rubio about U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding the possibility of a swift resolution to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Lavrov accused the U.S. of “betraying the spirit of Anchorage.” As noted by “Ukrainska Pravda,” this is how Moscow refers to its expectations regarding Ukraine’s capitulation. Russian officials claimed that Washington had allegedly reneged on commitments made during the meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska last August.
Marco Rubio responded by stating that no agreements regarding Ukraine were made during that meeting. On July 15, Trump also expressed his belief that Putin is ready to conclude an agreement to end the war in Ukraine and that this could happen soon.
