Lavrov said that Russia liked the U.S. approach to the peace plan
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow views Washington’s approach to negotiations on the war in Ukraine positively. According to him, the U.S. takes the “situation on the ground” into account during discussions.
According to Lavrov, in its contacts with Russian leadership, the American side is proceeding from what he calls “the realities on the ground.” The Russian minister linked this, in particular, to the “position of the residents” of the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia and the pseudo-referendums held there by the Russian authorities.
“This, of course, elicits a positive response from us and makes us willing to continue talks with them,” Lavrov stated. He also said that the American side allegedly acknowledges these “basic facts” and is trying to be helpful in finding a solution.
At the same time, Lavrov did not disclose the specific provisions of the new U.S. proposals for ending the war. The day before, U.S. Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and later met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
Following the talks, the parties did not announce any specific agreement on ending the war. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to try to resume the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia.
It should be noted that the day before, the Kremlin had already raised the possibility of returning to a trilateral negotiation format following the visits of U.S. President Donald Trump’s representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Moscow and Kyiv. At the same time, Peskov stated that it is still too early to discuss a specific location and date for such talks.
