Nearly 40,000 Kyiv residents took shelter in the subway during the Russian Federation's nighttime attack

On the night of August 19–20, Kyiv Metro stations served as shelters for more than 38,000 people. Among them were more than 2,000 children.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that these figures were provided by the Kyiv Metro municipal enterprise.

“On the night of August 20, during yet another massive shelling of the capital, more than 38,000 people were in Kyiv Metro stations, of whom more than 2,000 were children. The air raid alert lasted nearly 9 hours that night. This information was provided by the Kyiv Metro Municipal Enterprise,” according to a statement on the Kyiv City State Administration’s website.

It is noted that 46 underground stations of the Kyiv Metro operate around the clock as shelters during air raid alerts. All station lobbies are opened to ensure the shortest possible route to a safe place. Metro employees, together with the police, ensure quick and unimpeded access to the stations.

The metro operator also reminds the public: if you need to use the metro as a shelter in advance, you should arrive at the station before it closes for passenger service. The operating schedule is posted at every station. Whenever possible, it is recommended to choose central stations, which typically have more space to accommodate people.

Visitors are asked to bring only the bare essentials and to avoid bringing bulky items, such as mattresses and tents. These items take up a significant amount of space that is needed by others during enemy shelling.

The company also emphasized the need to avoid sitting on escalators and leaving belongings on them. In the event of an emergency or the need for an urgent evacuation, the escalators must be put into operation quickly. The presence of people or large items on them can slow down this process.
