Mass Russian attack on Ukraine: nine missiles and 165 drones, air defence destroys 137 UAVs

On the night of 5 January, Russian forces carried out a massive aerial attack on Ukraine, using ballistic missiles and a large number of strike drones.

This was reported by the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to the military, from 18:00 on 4 January the enemy attacked Ukraine with nine Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-300 surface-to-air guided missiles launched from Russia’s Bryansk and Voronezh regions.

In addition, Russian occupying forces used 165 strike unmanned aerial vehicles of the Shahed and Gerbera types, as well as UAVs of other types. Launches were carried out from the directions of Millerovo, Kursk, Shatalovo and Oryol. According to the Air Force, around one hundred of the drones were Shahed-type UAVs.

The repulsion of the air attack was ensured by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. As of 08:00, air defence forces had shot down or suppressed 137 enemy drones in the north, centre and east of the country.

At the same time, hits by ballistic and surface-to-air guided missiles, as well as 26 strike UAVs, were recorded at 10 locations. The fall of debris from downed drones was recorded at a further nine locations.

The Air Force reported that enemy drones remain in Ukrainian airspace. Citizens are urged to follow safety rules and respond promptly to air raid warning signals.
