The Russian Ministry of Defense Wants to Withhold Pay from Service Members for Crimes
The Russian Ministry of Defense has proposed requiring military personnel convicted of crimes after returning from the war against Ukraine to repay the payments they received upon signing their contracts. This proposal is contained in a draft resolution by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
This applies to service members who were not sentenced to imprisonment by a court. The document states that this measure is intended to increase service members’ motivation to comply with Russian law.
The draft provides for the repayment of a portion of the one-time payment of 195,000 or 400,000 rubles if the convicted person continues to serve. The amount is to be calculated in proportion to the number of months remaining until the end of the contract.
