Former political prisoner Mykola Karpiuk was killed on the front lines
On September 19, Mykola Karpyuk, a former Kremlin political prisoner, civic and political activist, and co-founder of the UNA-UNSO, was killed on the front lines while carrying out a combat mission in the Zaporizhzhia sector. This was reported by Viktor Yagun, former deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and former MPs Boryslav Bereza and Artur Palatny. He was 62 years old.
Mykola Karpyuk participated in the “Ukraine Without Kuchma” campaign, the Orange Revolution, and the Revolution of Dignity, after which he became deputy leader of the “Right Sector.” In 2014, he was abducted by Russian special services, and in 2016, he was sentenced in Russia to 22.5 years in prison on trumped-up charges of participating in the Chechen War. He was tortured in Russian prisons.
In September 2019, Karpyuk returned to Ukraine as part of a prisoner exchange, after which he worked in the office of the Ukrainian Ombudsman. Despite his advanced age, when the full-scale invasion began, he took up arms to defend the country.
