Five residents of Kherson will stand trial for guarding a railway line seized by the occupiers

Indictments against five residents of Kherson have been filed in court on charges of voluntarily participating in an illegal paramilitary unit in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. According to the prosecutor’s office, they were guarding railway infrastructure seized by Russian occupiers.

According to the investigation, after the capture of Kherson, the Russian occupiers established an illegal unit—the so-called “Kherson Paramilitary Security Detachment”—based at the seized “Kherson Railway” enterprise.

Five local residents voluntarily joined the unit and took on the roles of “riflemen of the militarized security detachment.” One of them began performing these duties no later than June 2022, and the other four—no later than July of that same year.

The defendants guarded facilities of the seized railway infrastructure, which the occupying forces used to meet their needs in the region. Through their actions, they facilitated the operation of the illegal unit created by the occupiers and the establishment of the occupation regime.

Since the defendants are located in territory not controlled by Ukraine, they will be tried in absentia.

The special pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation’s Melitopol Territorial Unit.
