Putin may not know the real situation on the battlefield — Sikorski
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that people surrounding Vladimir Putin may be concealing from him the true state of affairs at the front and in the economy.
Speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, the Polish diplomat stressed the importance of Ukraine’s successful counteroffensive actions. According to him, military pressure on the battlefield is the only effective instrument capable of influencing the aggressor’s position.
“The fact that Ukrainians are counterattacking in certain areas and regaining control of territory should ultimately convince Putin that he is unable to break through the front line and unable to win this war,” Sikorski said.
He added that the resilience of the Ukrainian civilian population, despite all the suffering, demonstrates the futility of the Kremlin’s hopes for a swift victory. However, the nature of dictatorial regimes creates barriers to objective analysis.
“But in dictatorships this is what happens: no one wants to bring bad news to the dictator. Therefore, Putin may not have a real picture of either the war or the Russian economy,” the Polish foreign minister emphasised.
Sikorski believes the war will continue until Russia’s resources are depleted to a critical level. Only the realisation that the costs do not match the results achieved will force Moscow to reconsider its aggressive strategy.
“Only when he understands that he cannot win at a price acceptable to him will he change his mind, and there will be a chance for peace,” the minister concluded.
In his view, the international community must continue applying pressure so that the true cost of the war becomes unbearable for the aggressor. This includes both sanctions policy and direct support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the front line.
It is worth recalling that Putin has nationalised the assets of one in ten billionaires from the Forbes list.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has made significant compromises in the war with Russia, including the fact that Putin and his entourage are not in prison.
