Russia increases military presence in the Arctic, potentially threatening Svalbard — DW

Russia is stepping up military and infrastructure activities in the Arctic region, potentially posing a threat to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

According to Deutsche Welle, Moscow is systematically restoring and modernising military bases above the Arctic Circle, expanding the capabilities of the Northern Fleet, and increasing the frequency of exercises and patrols in the region. Russian efforts are particularly focused on controlling strategic sea routes and access to the Arctic’s natural resources.

These developments have raised concerns among NATO countries, particularly Norway, which owns the Svalbard archipelago. Although Svalbard’s status is governed by the 1920 international treaty, which establishes a demilitarised regime, experts warn that growing Russian activity near the archipelago could shift the regional security balance.

In response, NATO has been compelled to strengthen its Arctic presence, increasing the number of air and naval patrols, expanding intelligence sharing, and enhancing cooperation among Arctic member states.
