Russia is withdrawing from the Kinburn Spit: what does this mean for Ukraine

Russian troops are gradually withdrawing from their positions on the Kinburn Spit, which was considered one of Russia’s key strongholds in southern Ukraine at the start of the full-scale war.

According to analysts, the main reason for the retreat was that Ukrainian drones completely disrupted Russian logistics.

Supplies of ammunition, fuel, and food have effectively ceased, and some units, including those from the Russian Airborne Forces’ 337th Regiment, have been redeployed to other areas.

Why the Kinburn Spit was important

The Kinburn Spit controls the approaches to the port of Mykolaiv and Ochakiv, and also allows Russia to carry out artillery and missile strikes on southern Ukraine.

Experts note that Russia previously viewed this area as a potential staging ground for advancing toward Odesa and gaining control over the mouths of the Dnipro and Southern Bug rivers.

Why its strategic importance has diminished

Analysts point out that the spit’s role has gradually diminished due to:

  • Russia’s abandonment of plans to advance on Odesa
  • the stabilization of the front in the Kherson direction
  • the shift of major combat operations to the Donbas and Zaporizhzhia region

According to experts, the situation in this sector has become less dynamic, which has diminished the military value of the bridgehead.

In the event of a complete Russian withdrawal, Ukraine will gain a number of advantages:

  • a reduced threat of artillery strikes on the Mykolaiv region
  • improved safety of shipping and export capacity through regional ports
  • loss of Russia’s capabilities for surveillance, UAV reconnaissance, and electronic warfare
  • weakening of Russia’s control over maritime routes in the area

At the same time, experts emphasize that the military significance of the spit would be significantly greater if Russia also controlled the left bank of the Dnipro.

Analysts note that the political and symbolic impact could be the most significant.

If Ukraine secures control, it will be able to declare the de facto security stabilization of the Mykolaiv region, which is significant for both domestic policy and international support.

This is reported by France24.

Russian troops failed to capture Kostiantynivka by May, but continue to make tactical advances in that direction.

As a reminder, the Russian Armed Forces suffered 1,310 casualties in the past 24 hours, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The occupiers attacked Kostiantynivka with incendiary munitions and caused a rain of phosphorus.

Russia attacked Kharkiv and the surrounding region overnight; there are casualties.
