Russia has destroyed a quarter of Sumy Oblast's power generation capacity
In the Sumy region, a 36.6 MW power generation facility was completely destroyed as a result of repeated Russian strikes. This represents approximately one-quarter of the region’s total power generation.
According to the association, the facility had already been hit by a Russian strike a few days ago, and on Monday it was struck three more times.
The total power generation capacity in the Sumy region is about 145 MW. Thus, the destruction of the 36.6-MW facility means a loss of approximately 25% of the region’s power generation.
The ASRMG explained that distributed generation in Ukraine began to develop actively as a way to reduce dependence on large power units.
“Distributed generation has developed in Ukraine as a response to the vulnerability of large power units: smaller facilities are harder to target, and the loss of one of them does not halt the supply on a regional scale. The Sumy region illustrates the limits of this logic.
When the region’s total capacity is small, each individual facility becomes systemically important, and its loss is immediately felt in the energy balance,” the association noted.
Thus, for regions with low total generation capacity, the destruction of even a single facility can significantly affect the region’s energy balance.
The ASRMG also emphasized that in frontline regions, new generation facilities are being built while damaged or destroyed capacity is being restored.
As a result, a significant portion of the new megawatts being commissioned by Ukrainian businesses does not actually increase the power system’s total capacity but rather compensates for the generation lost due to Russian attacks.
Thus, Russian strikes on energy infrastructure continue not only to destroy individual facilities but also to directly affect the generation balance in frontline regions.

In the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv, an enemy drone struck the roof of a four-story business center. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to investigate the circumstances and address the aftermath of the incident.
