Russia launched a massive drone attack on the Sumy region, damaging residential buildings

On the night of August 20–21, Russia launched a massive drone strike on the Sumy region, targeting Sumy and Konotop. The attack damaged residential buildings, and at least two people were injured.

This was reported by Serhiy Kryvosheyko, head of the Sumy Military Administration, and Oleg Grygorov, head of the Sumy Regional State Administration.

On the evening of August 20, the Russians attacked Konotop, reportedly using high-speed jet-powered strike drones. Three precision strikes were recorded in the city’s residential area, resulting in damage to buildings. No local residents were killed or injured, though one woman suffered an acute stress reaction.

On the night of August 21, Sumy also came under a massive attack. The enemy targeted civilian infrastructure and residential areas in the Kovpakivsky District—so far, strikes have been confirmed at four locations in the city. A two-story residential building was at the epicenter of one of the strikes; it sustained extensive damage and caught fire. Rescue workers reported several other fires in various parts of the city.

“The nighttime massive UAV attack on Sumy targeted urban civilian infrastructure and residential areas in the Kovpakivsky district. Fires are burning at several locations. The threat of follow-up strikes is hampering the work of rescue workers,” Kryvosheyko wrote.

At least two people were injured when a two-story house was hit; they are receiving the necessary medical care. Due to the threat of follow-up strikes, rescue teams are unable to fully operate at the fire sites; therefore, assessments and cleanup efforts following the attack are ongoing throughout the city. The final extent of the damage and the number of casualties are being determined.

Sumy remains one of Ukraine’s most vulnerable regional centers due to its proximity to the front line—it is located about 20 km away—and the intensity of airstrikes on the city in 2026 has increased significantly compared to previous years.

Earlier, Russia dropped nine aerial bombs on Kramatorsk.

The Russian attack overnight was one of the most cynical and large-scale strikes against Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.

In the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, near the “Auchan” hypermarket on Zdolbunivska Street, a dangerous object was discovered which, according to preliminary data, may be a cluster munition from an X-101 missile.
