Russia struck near the border with Poland for the third time this week
For the third time in a week, Russia attacked an area near the Ukrainian border crossing with Poland in Yahodyn. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that Moscow continues to escalate the conflict, and that Ukraine and its partners must increase pressure on Russia. According to him, the response should include additional air defense systems, new sanctions, and restrictions on the Russian military machine.
Russia has once again struck near the Ukrainian border with Poland. This time, the attack took place near the “Yagodyn” border crossing in Volyn. This is already the third attack in this area in just one week. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga responded to the latest strike.
According to him, the regular attacks near this important border crossing indicate that Russia is not ruling out further escalation. “For the third time in just one week, Russia has attacked the area near the Ukrainian border crossing with Poland in Yagodin. Moscow continues to escalate the situation,” Sibiga stated. The minister emphasized that Russian strikes must be met with more than just statements. In his view, every new attack should lead to increased pressure on Russia and enhanced capabilities for Ukraine to defend its territory.
Sybiga Outlined the Necessary Steps
Sybiga believes that one of the main tasks right now is to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. The goal is for Ukraine to be better able to protect its cities, infrastructure, and critical facilities from Russian missiles and drones. He also cited the tightening of sanctions against Russia as another priority. According to the minister, international pressure must directly impact Russia’s ability to continue the war.
Sibiga also called for increasing pressure on the Russian military machine. This involves restrictions designed to make it more difficult for Russia to produce weapons, acquire necessary technologies, and finance the war. “Russia must understand: escalation does not lead to hesitation. It has consequences,” emphasized the Ukrainian foreign minister.
Why the Yagodyn Area Is Important
The “Yagodin–Dorohusk” border crossing is one of the key transportation routes between Ukraine and Poland. Cargo and vehicles connecting Ukraine with the European Union pass through this route. Yagodin is also significant for Ukraine’s international logistics. That is why any strikes in this area pose additional risks not only to local residents but also to transportation links with Poland.
Of particular concern is the fact that Russian attacks near the border are recurring. The area has already been attacked three times in a single week. At the same time, Sibiga’s statement specifically refers to strikes near the border crossing. This does not mean that Russia attacked Polish territory.
Ukraine calls on its partners to increase pressure
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that regular Russian strikes must be met with a practical response. According to Sibiga, partners should not only condemn the attacks but also help Ukraine increase its defense capabilities. This primarily involves air defense systems and ammunition for them. This is particularly important for Ukraine given Russia’s regular, massive attacks on cities and critical infrastructure.
Sanctions remain another tool. Kyiv has repeatedly called on its allies to tighten restrictions against the Russian energy sector, defense industry, banks, and companies that help circumvent existing sanctions. Sibiga effectively called for turning every new Russian attack into an opportunity to increase international pressure. “Every new act of Russian terror should deprive Russia of an ever-increasing number of means to continue its aggression, while giving Ukraine more opportunities to defend itself,” the minister said.
Thus, the latest strike near Yagodyn was already the third such attack in a week. Ukrainian authorities view the recurrence of such strikes as a continuation of Russian escalation and are calling on partners to respond by strengthening air defense, sanctions, and pressure on Russia.
