The Russians destroyed the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the Kherson region

On the night of August 5, Russian troops destroyed the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the village of Darivka, Kherson District. The local community had built the church on its own to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers from Darivka who defended Ukraine. There is currently no information on casualties resulting from the attack.

Bishop Nikodim, head of the Kherson Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, reported the destruction of the church. According to him, Russian troops destroyed the church on the night of August 5. This happened on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. “Russian invaders destroyed the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Darivka, Kherson District. This new, standard-design church near the road to Beryslav was built by the village community with their own efforts in memory of the fallen soldiers from Darivka, defenders of Ukraine,” the bishop wrote.

The church was built with the funds and efforts of the residents of Darivka. For the local community, it was not only a place of worship but also a memorial to their fellow villagers who died defending Ukraine. Bishop Nikodim published photographs showing the aftermath of the strike. They reveal that the church building has been almost completely destroyed.

Russian troops regularly attack settlements in the Kherson region, particularly the Darivka community. Due to its proximity to the combat zone, the region is constantly subjected to artillery shelling, airstrikes, and drone attacks. This was reported by Bishop Nikodim, who heads the Kherson Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

As a result of a nighttime attack by Russian troops on the Kyiv region on August 5, 2026, 14 people were killed and another 27 civilians were wounded. Rescue workers continue to deal with the aftermath of the strikes and extinguish fires in several districts of the region.
