Russian attack damaged 533 Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives: the company is seeking $100 million
JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” has secured $100 million in grant funding as part of the RELINC project. The funds are earmarked for the purchase of used locomotives to expand the company’s fleet.
“Within the framework of the ‘Carpathian Eight,’ an agreement in principle has already been reached on $100 million in grant funding for the URTF trust fund as part of the RELINC project in collaboration with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. We plan to use the funds to purchase used locomotives on foreign markets,” the statement reads.
The company emphasized that since the start of the full-scale invasion, 533 locomotives from its own fleet and 75 locomotives belonging to private industrial enterprises have been damaged. Therefore, the railways need not only to restore what has been lost but also to expand their locomotive fleet.
In addition, Slovakia has agreed to transfer three electric locomotives to Ukraine.
Also, during the summit, a framework agreement was reached with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to allocate 130 million euros through UZ Energy for critical needs and the energy resilience of the railways. The relevant agreements are scheduled to be signed by the end of September.
