Russian drones attack bus near Nikopol: five killed

Russian drones, according to Ukrainian officials, attacked a passenger bus near Nikopol in Ukraine and a passenger train in Mykolaiv Oblast on September 16. Five people were killed and seven others were injured in the bus strike, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing Ukrainian officials.

Attack near Nikopol

According to police, four men and one woman were killed in a morning attack on a passenger bus near the frontline city of Nikopol. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported seven people injured.

Hanzha also published a photograph of a white vehicle with shattered windows and a blood-like trail along its side. Reuters was unable to independently verify the image.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack another act of brutality and urged the United States and Europe to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation, the aggressor state.

Strikes on train and locomotive

Acting head of Mykolaiv Oblast Heorhii Reshetilov said that a Russian drone attacked a passenger train in the region. According to him, all 168 passengers and crew members were evacuated from the train, and no one was injured. After the first strike, the train was attacked twice more, the official said.

Zelenskyy also reported a strike on a locomotive in Kovel, near the border with Poland. As the publication notes, this was preceded by other recent attacks on the railway, including a strike on a train near the Polish border.

Ukraine's state railway operator told Reuters that Russia has attacked a total of 1,700 railway infrastructure facilities since the beginning of the year. According to the company, 120 passenger cars, 304 locomotives and 43 railway stations were hit. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russian forces are striking passenger trains, locomotives, stations and railway routes that are important for civilians, evacuations and Ukraine's economy.
