Russian Mi-28NM helicopters have been equipped with new drone defense systems

Russia has announced the modernization of its Mi-28NM attack helicopters, which have reportedly been equipped with new systems to protect against drones. These include previously unknown sensors and onboard equipment that may be part of a new or upgraded defense system.

According to Russian public sources, the new Russian Mi-28NM attack helicopters have been equipped with additional systems that are likely intended to protect against Ukrainian drones. Previously unknown sensors labeled “NCH” (microwave) have begun to appear on the helicopters’ fuselages—devices operating in the microwave frequency range—located on the wingtips, in the nose section, and in the tail area.

Previously, the “Multik” electronic warfare system had been mentioned in the media, which was allegedly developed to counter FPV drones. However, the components installed on the Mi-28NM do not resemble it, leading to speculation either about a modernization of the already known L-370 “Vitebsk” system or the emergence of an entirely new defense system.

The Mi-28NM itself is a heavily modernized version of the Mi-28N attack helicopter, which demonstrated limited effectiveness and a number of technical problems in previous conflicts. The upgraded version features enhanced armament, including the capability to fire “Vyrib 305” guided missiles with a range of up to 25 kilometers, allowing it to operate from safer distances.

However, even this range does not guarantee protection against drones, which are increasingly becoming a key factor on the battlefield. That is why the emergence of new defense systems could significantly impact the survivability of helicopters in combat zones and partially shift the balance of threats for Ukrainian units that use drones as one of their primary weapons. This is reported by Russian public groups.

A series of powerful explosions rocked the Russian city of Voronezh, likely caused by a missile strike.

On the night of June 22, Russian authorities reported a massive drone attack on Moscow and several regions of the Russian Federation. According to Russian officials, 59 drones were allegedly destroyed as they approached the capital.

In the temporarily occupied city of Armiansk, located on the Crimean Peninsula, a building belonging to the Border Guard Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation caught fire as a result of a nighttime drone attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will continue to intensify long-range strikes on Russian territory and expand the capabilities of its own drones.
