Russia was attacked by 629 drones overnight; more than 350 of them were headed for Moscow
On the night of September 18, Russia suffered one of the largest drone attacks. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported 629 drones that were allegedly detected over 14 regions and in the waters of two seas.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, more than 350 drones were heading toward the capital. During the attack, drones were also reported over the Moscow region, the Rostov region, and occupied Crimea.
Russian officials described the nighttime drone raid on the Moscow region as one of the largest to date. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, hundreds of drones were heading toward the region, and some of them were allegedly intercepted as they approached the capital.
“Between 8:00 p.m. on September 17 and 7:00 a.m. on September 18, more than 350 UAVs were flying toward the Moscow region; most of them were destroyed at a distance. Sixty-four drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow,” the mayor said.
Explosions and the sounds of air defense systems were heard in the Podolsk, Ramenskoye, Domodedovo, Istra, Kolomna, and other districts of the region, as well as in Moscow’s Troitsky District. Emergency services are extinguishing fires at the crash sites. It is not yet known whether any military personnel or critical infrastructure were affected.
