U.S. urges Russia to end “nightmare” in Ukraine following “Oreshnik” strike
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting amid intensive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system during severe cold. The session was broadcast live.
Ukraine initiated the meeting after another launch of the ballistic missile “Oreshnik” near the Polish border. These strikes have left millions without electricity, heating, and water in temperatures as low as -20°C.
U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN Tammy Bruce expressed outrage at the escalation:
“Russia launched the ballistic missile ‘Oreshnik’, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, near the borders of Poland and NATO. This is a dangerous and inexplicable escalation,” she stated. Bruce emphasized that the attacks are occurring amid peace negotiations and called on all parties to “seriously pursue peace” and “put an end to this nightmare.”
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Andrii Melnyk highlighted the humanitarian disaster. Millions of Ukrainians, including his own family in Kyiv, are suffering from outages in freezing temperatures.
“This missile poses a direct threat to European security,” Melnyk said, stressing the risks to both the EU and NATO.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo exposed the systematic nature of Russia’s actions, noting that Moscow deliberately targets energy infrastructure during critical periods of cold when heating needs are at their highest.
The attacks disproportionately affect children, the elderly, and those with limited mobility, leaving millions without basic necessities.
Ukraine is calling on the UN Security Council to take real action in response to the “Oreshnik” strike, especially as the U.S. has withdrawn from dozens of international structures.
