The Center for Public Diplomacy Debunked a Russian Fake News Story Claiming Ukraine Was Planning a Terrorist Attack Against British Diplomats
Russian propaganda is spreading a statement by the FSB alleging that Ukraine is planning a terrorist attack against the British ambassador and other diplomats in Moscow. The Center for Countering Disinformation has labeled this information a Russian fake.
“Russian propaganda is spreading an FSB statement alleging that ‘Ukraine is preparing a terrorist attack’ against the British ambassador and other diplomats in Moscow. According to the Russian security service, law enforcement detained an embassy security officer who, allegedly on the orders of Ukrainian intelligence, was gathering information about the embassy’s security system. Russia claimed that Ukraine is allegedly seeking in this way to ‘drag London into a direct conflict with Russia.’ “In reality, this is yet another disinformation campaign by Russian intelligence agencies, aimed at creating an ‘alibi’ for themselves in advance against the backdrop of possible provocations of their own,” the statement reads.
As the Center for Public Diplomacy emphasized, by accusing Ukraine of preparing attacks on foreign diplomats, Moscow is attempting to preemptively shift responsibility for sabotage or other escalatory actions that Russia itself may be preparing against the United Kingdom and its representatives. The use of such tactics is a typical tool of Russian propaganda and intelligence services. In particular, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service has repeatedly carried out such information attacks in the past. Russia regularly makes false accusations to discredit Ukraine in the eyes of its partners and divert attention from its own hybrid threats in Europe.
An example of such manipulation is Russia’s promotion of false claims about a “Ukrainian connection” to the drone incident near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig Airport.

The day before, 221 combat engagements were recorded along the front line. The enemy launched the most attacks in the Pokrovsk direction, where the Defense Forces repelled 21 assaults, and Russian troops lost more than 60 occupiers.
