A fire in Rivne claimed the life of a teenager; three children are in the hospital
In Rivne, a 15-year-old boy died in a fire in a high-rise building, and three other children were hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning. The fire engulfed an apartment and the balconies, and rescue workers had to evacuate residents due to heavy smoke. In total, five people were rescued from the building and another twenty were evacuated.
The fire broke out in the morning in one of the apartments on the seventh floor of a nine-story residential building on Kulika and Gudachek Streets in Rivne, and within minutes, the fire had intensified, engulfing not only the apartment but also several balconies. While searching the smoke-filled apartment, rescuers discovered the body of a boy born in 2015 who, according to preliminary reports, was unable to escape the fire.

Three other children—born in 2018, 2013, and 2026—were hospitalized in moderate condition with a diagnosis of “carbon monoxide poisoning,” indicating severe poisoning from combustion byproducts. Medical personnel are providing them with the necessary care, and the victims’ conditions are being assessed. Upon the arrival of State Emergency Service units, the apartment was engulfed in intense flames, and thick smoke was rapidly spreading through the stairwell, complicating the rescuers’ efforts. Two teams from the gas and smoke protection service were deployed to extinguish the fire, working under conditions of high temperatures and limited visibility.

Due to the heavy smoke, rescuers were forced to carry out an emergency evacuation of the building’s residents; in particular, two women from a neighboring apartment were rescued from the upper floors using a ladder truck. In total, five people were rescued during the operation, and about twenty more residents were evacuated to a safe location.

The fire was eventually extinguished, but its consequences were tragic for one family and led to hospitalization and a lengthy recovery for others due to smoke inhalation. Experts are investigating the cause of the fire, according to a report from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Rivne Oblast.
