Ukrainian forces push back Russians in Donetsk region

Ukrainian troops recently advanced in the Donetsk region, particularly in the area between Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka, where the Defence Forces were able to improve their positions. This was reported in a new analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Analysts note that the Ukrainian military is not only holding back Russian attacks but in some areas is regaining previously lost positions.

According to ISW, Ukrainian units advanced in the tactical area between Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka. Geolocated videos posted online on 3 and 4 March show Ukrainian forces moving southeast and south of Kostiantynivka, where intense fighting has taken place in recent weeks.

At the same time, other videos show that Russian troops continue to shell Ukrainian positions in the same area. On 3 March, footage captured strikes on Ukrainian positions southeast of Kostiantynivka—areas where analysts had previously indicated possible Russian advances. ISW analysts emphasize that even if maps mark zones of Russian penetration, this does not mean full control; Ukrainian positions may still remain, and fighting continues. The videos from 3 March show ongoing Russian strikes south and southeast of Kostiantynivka, contradicting Russian claims of full control.

A commander of a Ukrainian battalion fighting along the Kostiantynivka–Druzhkivka axis reported on 5 March that Russian forces had partially restored their communications on the front. According to him, Moscow regained roughly 50–60% of the connectivity lost after Starlink disruptions. “The occupiers are setting up Wi-Fi bridges and deploying directional antennas on key tactical heights,” the commander said.

On other sections of the front, no significant changes in the line of contact were recorded. On the Pokrovsk axis, Russian attack intensity has slightly decreased, according to a spokesperson for a Ukrainian brigade operating there. The reduction in Russian attempts to penetrate Ukrainian positions is likely due to equipment shortages, particularly unmanned ground vehicles used for logistics and ammunition delivery.

ISW concludes that the frontline remains complex and dynamic. In some areas, Russian forces are attempting pressure, but Ukrainian troops continue to hold the line and occasionally regain positions.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin is reportedly preparing the groundwork to undermine negotiations with Ukraine, and Ukrainian intelligence has released footage of strikes in Crimea destroying Russian ships and a helicopter.
