Russia considers introducing a unified Internet ID for users

Russia is planning to implement a single Internet identifier to be used across all websites and social networks. This ID will be linked to users’ phone numbers and later anonymised and encrypted to protect privacy.

This was reported by Russian propaganda media

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development claims the system aims to bring order to the internet space rather than to monitor or track users’ activities. The proposal has sparked debate due to concerns over privacy and potential state control.

It remains unclear when and how this Internet ID will be rolled out, but the initiative signals a move toward centralising digital identity in the country.
