Video: Russian Agent Detained for Coordinating Attacks on Kyiv and the Poltava Region

Law enforcement officials detained a soldier suspected of working for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). According to the case file, the man was gathering data on defense and critical infrastructure facilities to help coordinate massive strikes on Kyiv on September 21–24.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) determined that a Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemember, who had recently been mobilized in the Ternopil region, was responsible for directing the Russian attacks. Shortly after being drafted, he left his military unit’s base in the Kyiv region without authorization, settled in one of the capital’s hostels, and began looking for “easy” money on Telegram channels.

“A Russian intelligence officer recruited him via the messaging app and, in exchange for the promise of ‘quick’ money, instructed him to direct strikes against Kyiv. To do this, the agent transmitted the locations of facilities to Russia that, in his opinion, could be used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. After the Russian attacks, he would go out into the field to inspect the aftermath of the enemy ‘strikes,’” the statement reads.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect, in particular, spent four days tracking potential “targets” in order to direct “Geran-5” jet drones and ballistic missiles toward the capital. As a result of the shelling that took place during those days, civilians in the capital were killed and wounded. The combined shelling also damaged residential areas in several districts of the city and a maternity hospital.

The suspect also planned to set fire to official vehicles belonging to Ukrainian defenders. He also traveled to the Poltava region to assess the situation there following recent shelling, the agency reported.

It is noted that the suspect was detained near his temporary residence. During searches, authorities found two smartphones on him, which he used to coordinate his actions with the FSB. They also seized a flammable mixture that he planned to use to set a Ukrainian soldier’s car on fire.

The suspect was notified of charges under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). The man is currently in custody. The penalty under this article provides for life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
