Video: In occupied Oleshky, the hospital is left with only four medical staff members
The situation at the hospital in the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region is critical. Only four staff members remain at the facility, which has left it on the brink of closure.
Tetyana Gasanenko, the head of administration, reported this to Sestry.
According to Gasanenko, due to a critical shortage of medicines and medical supplies, the care the hospital can provide is minimal. In fact, they can only stop bleeding there.
The humanitarian situation in the city is also worsening. Local residents gather daily at a designated spot, where they try to exchange goods for food, medicine, or other essential items. A barter system is effectively in place in Oleshky. For example, a kilogram of salt or sugar—or even a single Citramon tablet—can be valued at 1,000 rubles (approximately 530 UAH) as the cost for an equivalent exchange.
There, people also learn the latest information about the dead, the survivors, and possible evacuations.
“The hospital basements are being used as morgues, where bodies are simply piled up,” said Gasanenko. The bodies of people killed by shelling and drone attacks can remain on the streets for months. They are torn apart by stray dogs.
In a comment to the publication “Apostrophe,” Gasanenko added that over a hundred bodies have been stored in the basement for many months. She emphasized that this is despite the fact that the city has been without electricity for over four years.
