Witkoff says there has been progress on new trilateral talks
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said there had been significant progress following talks in Moscow and Kyiv. According to him, there has been movement in planning additional trilateral talks involving the United States, Ukraine and Russia, the aggressor state.
Witkoff's statement
Witkoff wrote on social network X that significant progress had been made during the contacts, including on the schedule for new trilateral meetings. As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, he visited Russia and Ukraine over the weekend together with Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law.
Witkoff and Kushner's visit to Kyiv on Sunday was their first trip to the Ukrainian capital. A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that the US representatives had brought new and “more effective” proposals for ending the war.

Positions of Kyiv and Moscow
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meanwhile warned that hostilities would likely continue through the winter. On September 7, the Kremlin of the aggressor state did not rule out holding trilateral talks with the United States and Ukraine to end the war.
Representatives of Moscow and Kyiv last met at US-organized talks in Geneva in February, but did not reach an agreement on territorial issues. The publication notes that Washington's diplomatic efforts have slowed in recent months as the Trump administration focused its attention on the war with Iran.
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, has resulted in the deaths of at least 15,000 civilians, according to the UN. The organization notes that the actual number of victims is likely significantly higher.
