Zelenskyy called for strengthening Ukraine's air defense and protection against ballistic missiles via PURL

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, particularly with systems to protect against ballistic missiles.

According to the president, the Russian attack was a combined assault—the enemy used drones and ballistic missiles. Regions of Ukraine and critical infrastructure facilities were targeted.

“Since last night, we have been working to address the consequences of the Russian attack on our regions. It was a combined strike: drones and ballistic missiles. The Russians struck critical infrastructure in the Poltava, Sumy, and Kherson regions, Zelenskyy said.

The president reported that Russian troops struck residential buildings in the Kharkiv region.

In Kramatorsk, a guided aerial bomb struck a high-rise building. According to Zelenskyy, State Emergency Service units managed to rescue four people.

Three people were also injured in Zaporizhzhia, and two in Kryvyi Rih.

In addition, the Russian army struck a residential high-rise building in Odesa. In Chubynske, Kyiv Oblast, emergency services worked to extinguish fires at industrial facilities that broke out following a drone attack.

The head of state emphasized that Russia continues to produce missiles and expand the war, so Ukraine must strengthen its capabilities to defend its airspace.

Separately, Zelenskyy drew attention to additional air defense packages from European partners and the need to strengthen protection against ballistic missiles through the PURL.

“This week, our European allies made important decisions to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. It is important that these be supplemented by additional packages of protection against ballistic missiles, primarily through the PURL. Anything that strengthens our air defense effectively saves the lives of Ukrainians every day. To deter Russia’s desire to continue the war, we need to effectively shoot down the missiles that Moscow is so desperate to keep using to prevent the war from ending. I am grateful to everyone who understands this and is helping, the president said.

According to Zelenskyy, strengthening air defense and effectively intercepting Russian missiles directly help save the lives of Ukraine’s civilian population.

He made this statement following yet another Russian airstrike.

On the night of August 27, Russian troops struck industrial facilities and an energy facility in the Poltava region. The attack caused power outages, leaving residents in seven communities without electricity.

The occupiers struck facilities of the Gas Network in two regions; one person was injured.

The occupiers have intensified their attacks in the Kupiansk direction.

As a reminder, Russia attacked warehouses and energy infrastructure in the Odesa region.

Earlier, drones attacked Ozon logistics centers in two regions of Russia simultaneously.

Drones also struck Krasnodar, causing a fire at a warehouse.

Earlier, warehouses caught fire in Akulovo, near Moscow.
