Albania is prepared to give up its veto power in order to join the EU

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that the country is prepared to agree even to a temporary restriction on its national veto right if this helps speed up its accession to the European Union.

This was reported by Euractiv.

According to Rama, Albania is ready to go “all in” for EU membership, supporting the idea of temporarily depriving new members of the right to block certain EU decisions. This applies, in particular, to sanctions and other decisions that require unanimous support from member states.

The Albanian prime minister emphasized that the country fully adheres to EU foreign policy, so he sees no problem with such a step. At the same time, he called on Brussels to accelerate the EU enlargement process amid security challenges in Europe.

On Thursday, May 14, a flag-raising ceremony for the three new full members—Albania, Finland, and Sweden—took place at the headquarters of NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) in Tallinn. This expansion has brought the institution closer to its goal of becoming the first center of excellence in which absolutely all Alliance member countries are represented.

Albania and the European Union have opened the final—fifth—negotiation cluster regarding the country’s accession to the EU.
