London's Heathrow Airport Flooded, Access to Terminals Restricted — The Guardian
On August 15, at Heathrow, the UK’s largest airport, a burst water pipe flooded the central terminal area, leading to temporary restrictions on vehicle access to Terminals 2 and 3. Flights were not disrupted, and the roads to the terminals were reopened by the afternoon.
“Due to flooding in the central terminal area, those trying to reach or leave either of these terminals cannot do so by car. Passengers are advised to use the train or subway. Access to the terminals’ parking lots is also difficult, so passengers who left their cars there cannot reach them,” British media reported.
In particular, an airport spokesperson stated:
“Our teams are working to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. The source of the leak has been contained, and repair work is currently underway.”
These disruptions coincided with the school vacation period—one of the busiest times of the year for the airport. Meanwhile, Heathrow announced that July 19 was the busiest day of the year so far, with more than 267,000 passengers passing through the airport.

Airlines have different policies regarding missed flights, so it’s worth finding out if you’re eligible for a free rebooking or a refund if your flight has departed. If you’ve paid for airport parking but can no longer use it due to road closures, contact the parking operator as soon as possible to find out if you can change your reservation or receive a refund. “You should also check your travel insurance to see if it covers expenses incurred due to service disruptions, such as a missed flight or additional transportation costs,” advised Rory Boland, editor of *Which? Travel*.
